Articles of the Week:
Afro Futures: How Can We Win
On this week’s episode of Afro Future Yusuf Abdul-Qadir is joined by Kimberly Latrice Jones. Kimberly is an American author known for co-authoring the book I’m Not Dying With You Tonight and for the viral video How Can We Win published during the George Floyd protests. The two discuss some of Kimberly’s work, how she first got recognized and the impact felt by Black women during a time filled with racially motivated violence.
Tax the Rich! Also the Very Affluent! But Mainly the Rich!
Republicans say tax cuts pay for themselves. They never do. How about we try something that actually does work?
Read the Article By Al Franken in Rolling Stone
… the total wealth owned by America’s billionaires grew 55 percent over the preceding 13 months.
This is at least as scary as voter suppression:
This is the Republicans’ back-up plan in case they can’t suppress enough votes
Read the Article in the Washington Post
… But bills giving legislators more oversight of elections, allowing them to interfere in the running of elections and otherwise injecting partisanship into the process, already have passed in Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas, according to the report. These could dramatically alter the outcome when a fraudster such as Trump comes calling.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Once again, John Katko uses deceitful and selective language to mislead his constituents and produce false data to justify his right-wing positions: Katko has a constituent survey. It consists of one question, and the only choices provided line up with the completely inadequate Republican “Infrastructure proposal”. You could use some of the proposals in The American Jobs Plan (Link to Fact Sheet) to fill in the OTHER box in the survey
CALL KATKO and express your outrage at his constant dishonesty! (315) 423-5657

Jewish Fast for Gaza
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16, 2021 AT 12 PM EDT – 1 PM EDT
James M. Hanley Federal Building
Event by Jewish Voice for Peace – Syracuse
We are joining in with the national Jewish Fast for Gaza. We’ll gather for an hour at the Federal Building to share fellowship and advocate for justice. We invite others to join us downtown or to fast on your own for the day. All are welcome – regardless of religious/ethnic identification and fasting is encouraged but not required.
The national effort is a religious initiative launched by a group of rabbis, Jews and people of faith/conscience with three goals:
• to call on Israel to immediately lift the blockade of Gaza;
• to call on the US government to cease all military aid to Israel until it complies with basic standards of human rights and international law;
• to call on Israel to negotiate a just peace that guarantees equality, justice and freedom for all who live between the river and sea.

Virtual Town Hall w/ Majority Leader Chuck Schumer
Wednesday, June 167:30 – 8:30pm EDT Link to Event
Join us for a massive virtual town hall and musical celebration with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Attorney General Letitia James, Congressman Mondaire Jones, and Congressman Jamaal Bowman. We’ll hear the latest update on the status of the For the People Act, get answers on how the bill impacts you, and talk about its connections to the civil rights movement. By joining this event, you are helping us combat mass voter suppression and strengthen our democracy!
The For the People Act (HR1/S1) is the most critical voting rights legislation of our lifetime, and its fate will be determined in the next two months. The bill seeks to prevent partisan gerrymandering, strengthen the right to vote, lessen the influence of big money in our politics, and restore ethical norms. It’s a desperately needed response to decades of voter suppression (including the legislative efforts in many states right now) and other antidemocratic assaults, like the Jan. 6 Capitol uprising.
Live Spanish Interpretation, English closed captioning, and ASL interpretation available.
