Action Alerts

We have a creative idea and we want you to join us! Harris supporter and international singer P!nk will be performing at the Dome on Sunday, October 6th at 6:30pm. Who do you think will be attending this concert? Probably young women, who will be key to voting in November. While people stand in line, we’ll be checking their voter registration and talking to them about voting for Harris and Prop 1. We’ll have stickers to give them too. Would you like to be a part of this fun action to engage young people in the upcoming election? Come to our CNY Solidarity Meeting Sunday, September 29th meeting to learn more details.

Kudos to Sarah Reeske whose LTE warning voters about Brandon Williams was published this week in the Daily Sentinel. Since the newspapers only publish a submission from an individual once every month, each of us only has a couple of opportunities to be heard–and influence voters– between now and Nov. 5th. Keep writing LTE’s! Let your neighbors know what’s at stake in this election, or why our Democratic candidates deserve their support.

Please note that most newspapers have early deadlines for letters in support of candidates before the election

Support an arms embargo against Israel and a permanent cease-fire!

The U.S. cannot claim to be working towards peace while simultaneously sending the weapons that enable genocide. The only way to reach a desperately needed lasting cease-fire—including the release of all Israeli and Palestinian captives—is for the U.S. to exert pressure on the Israeli government by supporting a full arms embargo.

Send a message today.  – through the American Friends Service Committee

Articles of the Week

Please stop sharing funny pet-eating memes; Rebecca Solnit

Hey if you think it’s fun and funny to amplify joke versions of the malicious MAGA smears claiming that immigrants are eating cats, then you’re right in there with JD Vance, who asserted that he’ll continue spreading it though he knows it’s not true. You’re amplifying hate, whether or not you think you’re a progressive person–and probably you’re not thinking about how you’re impacting members of the groups under attack who have to see your posts….

What we should have all learned since Gamergate and Pizzagate is that every time we repeat a smear or lie, we embed it deeper in the culture, fortify its ability to harm, and only when serious deconstruction/debunking is taking place (no, your cute memes are not that) is it likely to dismantle rather than perpetrate. The rumor/smear was started by actual Nazis. Thanks for not helping the Nazis….

And here’s a really good online essay about why this is so harmful and how that harm is intended to spread to Harris: https://www.theframelab.org/jd-vances-racist-attack-on…/

A piece about those actual Nazis who started this: https://gwenfrisbiefulton.medium.com/all-eyes-should-be

Strategy: Is this the real reason Trump and Vance are telling the cats and dogs lie?

The advisor argued, “We talk about abortion, we lose. We talk about immigration, we win…. We’ll take the hit to prove the bigger point.”

U.S. universities spent the summer strategizing to suppress student activism. Here is their plan.

Schools across the U.S. have altered policies and even landscapes in an attempt to make a repeat of last spring’s Palestine protests impossible. The result is a far-reaching war on free expression and the increased militarization of higher education.

…a common formula: more militarization, more law enforcement, more criminalization, and more consolidation of institutional power.

Nuclear power emits no carbon dioxide but is ‘anything but clean’

“…construction of reactors has a huge carbon footprint. And the nuclear fuel cycle is highly toxic. Uranium mining in the American Southwest has littered the land with piles of tailings (residues of processing the ore) and contaminated the groundwater, exposing local — especially Indigenous — communities to radioactivity and high cancer rates. Nuclear energy creates highly radioactive waste which must be stored at the reactors since there’s no permanent repository to put it in. And how do you ensure safe containment of something that emits deadly radiation for the next 200,000 years?”

ICYMI: Syracuse should adopt ‘Good Cause Eviction’ (Guest Opinion by Alexander Marion and Maurice “Mo” Brown)

The eviction crisis is on our doorstep today, and Syracuse demands a solution that will create an impact immediately.

That solution is a Good Cause Eviction law for the city of Syracuse. Good Cause Eviction eliminates “no-fault” evictions — removing a tenant just because a landlord wants to — and gives tenants the right of basic due process during an eviction. Contrary to popular belief, it does not ban evictions. Rather, it requires a landlord to present to a court of law a good reason to evict a tenant, like criminal violations, failure to pay rent, or preventing a landlord from accessing the property.

Speak Out Against Massive Utility Bill Increases at the PSC Public Hearing

Wednesday, Sept. 18 – 6 p.m.

Clay Town Hall, 4401 Route 31

On Wednesday, Sept. 18, join Citizen Action of NY and AGREE at the Clay Town Hall at 6 p.m. to speak out against National Grid’s proposed rate hikes. The utility wants to raise upstate gas and electric rates by a whopping 20% and 15%, hitting working families the hardest. Not only that–a portion of the rate hike will be used to invest in dangerous and dirty fossil fuel infrastructure. This is your chance to tell the Public Service Commission why these hikes are unjust and unaffordable. Stand with us, and let’s hold National Grid accountable!

Email Ethan at egormley@citizenactionny.org for more information, carpool options, or talking points.

Run the Redline

Sunday, September 29, 2024

Start/Finish: Everson Plaza, 401 Harrison St, Syracuse 13202

A 5K Run and 3K Roll/Stroll event that traces a portion of the infamous ‘redline’ that helped segregate Syracuse. During the Great Depression, the Federal Government worked with local officials and real estate professionals to draw maps that placed red lines around neighborhoods deemed too risky to receive federal housing assistance. These ‘redlining’ maps deprived Syracuse’s most racially integrated neighborhoods of opportunity, and their effects can still be felt today. Run the Redline to experience the physical spaces shaped by these federal policies.

Micron is coming to Central New York and is scheduled to receive upwards of $20B in public subsidies and tax credits from federal, state, and local governments. With this historic investment, the CNY community has been promised thousands of good jobs created by the project, but there has been little discussion or firm commitments made regarding what exactly a “good job” is, or how equitable access for said jobs will be achieved for current local residents, especially Syracusans.

Please join us for a community Town Hall discussion around CNY Micron good jobs and equitable access.

SYRACUSE  STREET HEAT

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.

A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team:  Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….

To learn more, call Ann or Ed: (315) 478 4571.

FIRST & THIRD TUESDAYS OF THE MONTH…4 TO 4:45 P.M. (Killer Drones)

Across from the main gate of Hancock AFB, home of the 174th Attack Wing of the NYS National Guard  training Reaper drone operators. 6000 East Molloy Road.

EVERY FRIDAY…4 to 4:45 p.m. (“CEASE FIRE NOW”, etc./ Palestine solidarity)

A handful of us disperse along the sidewalk with our signs at the very busy intersection of Erie Blvd East and East Genesee St. (across from the DeWitt fire station; park in the nearby mini mall lot.)

EVERY  SATURDAY…9 to 9:45 a.m.

(range of issues: racism, Palestine solidarity  anti-war, anti-war, etc.)

Across from the Syracuse Regional Market, 2100 Park  St. at the 81N Liverpool/Park St. exit. Park in the Market lot on the north side of Park. You can use one of our signs or bring your own.
