November 19, 2024 – November 26, 2024
|
Thank you to everyone who made it to our gathering this past weekend. We had an amazing turnout and a great discussion about where we go from here. We will continue this discussion and continue organizing at our next meeting on Zoom: Monday, December 2 at 7pm.Â
|
With our weekly newsletter we provide actions for you to take, articles to read and share and events to attend. Let’s remember to pace ourselves. Be conscious and protective of our mental energy. Remember that what we do matters, even when we don’t always see the results immediately. So let’s breathe together, lean in on each other, and pace ourselves for the long haul. We got this.

Indivisible Onondaga County has migrated from Twitter to Bluesky.Â
Bluesky is a social media app that works similarly to Twitter, but isn’t owned by Elon Musk and has better user controls for avoiding unwanted content. It’s been taking off as lots of people have abandoned Twitter since the election.
We’ve been up and running for less than a week, and we already have 200+ followers. The national Indivisible folks are posting regularly, and more local Indivisible groups have been joining every day. If you’d like to join us, you can go here to set up an account:Â https://bsky.app/
Then go here to find our profile and follow us: https://bsky.app/profile/indivisibleononcty.bsky.social
We’ll be sure to post some tips and tricks to help new folks get started, and we’re open to helping people out at an upcoming meeting as well.

Jewish Voice for Peace: Tell Congress: ARMS EMBARGO NOW.
|
There is absolutely no moral or legal justification for the atrocities and war crimes that the Israeli government is perpetrating against Palestinians. And the Biden administration and Congress have facilitated this genocide by continuously sending weapons and funding to the Israeli military, despite mass opposition from the American people.Â
Israel is able to conduct these daily massacres and carry out its genocide against Palestinians because of funding and weapons from the U.S. government. This must end. It must end now.
Demand an arms embargo and an end to military funding to Israel NOW.
Write to Congress.

Keep New York’s Commitment to Cut Child Poverty
|
New York State continues to have the worst income inequality and some of the highest child poverty rates in the nation, yet we also have the resources to solve these problems. In 2021, New York State committed to cutting child poverty in half by 2033. This year, Gov. Hochul and the legislature can make good on that promise by passing a transformative package of policies that would slash child poverty and pay for it by fairly taxing the richest corporations and individuals.
Â
It’s up to all of us to make sure New York follows through and implements these policies to lift more than a quarter million kids and their families out of poverty. Add your name to call on Gov. Hochul to include this anti-poverty agenda in her Executive Budget proposal.

Submit Feedback on Proposed District Maps
|
Onondaga County Democrats sued in 2022 Republicans and County Executive Ryan McMahon over maps they claimed were drawn improperly. A judge ruled that Onondaga County’s current district maps must be redrawn to include incarcerated individuals in September 2024. Republicans have since proposed new maps that reflect some small changes to districts. Review Maps HereÂ

Congress: Protect The Right To Dissent
|
Â
In a clear reaction to pro-Palestine protests, the House might pass legislation that would hand the government a dangerous tool to stifle free speech and punish disfavored groups… This bill (H.R. 9495) gives the executive branch the authority to effectively dismantle any nonprofit organization it deems to have provided “material support” to terrorist groups and the potential for abuse under this law is staggering.
We’ve already seen government officials conflate protesting students with Hamas or other terrorist groups. It isn’t a stretch to imagine how this bill could be used to pressure universities to shut down student groups and further criminalize dissent in this country.Â
Tell your representatives to vote no on H.R. 9495.

Defiance must be woven into the fabric of our daily lives, rather than simply proclaimed at marches or on social media. Some refusals will be visible, but many quiet acts of disobedience—like a healthcare worker’s refusal to aid in criminalizing a patient—have the potential to save lives and interrupt state violence.

Will Hochul Fight Trump’s Plan for ‘Mass Deportations’?
|
States may seem powerless … Immigration is the purview of the federal government, which, in just over two months, will seek to … detain and deport as many people as possible, whether those communities and their state and local officials like it or not.
But deportations are a logistical game, and state and local governments hold some of the cards. For a removal campaign as massive as what Trump is promising, states can aid ICE’s efforts to find, apprehend, and lock up deportable people. Or they can throw a wrench in the agency’s plans.
Despite New York state’s immigrant-friendly reputation, the jury’s out on which role it will play. The direction it goes depends heavily on whether state lawmakers and Governor Kathy Hochul take quick action.

Pentagon Fails Seventh Straight Audit as Annual US Military Budget Nears $1 Trillion
|
Sen. Bernie Sanders has introduced legislation that would require the Pentagon to return a portion of its budget as a penalty for failing audits, but lawmakers from both parties have declined to consider the bill.
The Pentagon is the largest U.S. federal agency and is responsible for roughly half of the government’s annual discretionary spending, with its yearly budget approaching $1 trillion despite long-standing concerns about the department’s inability to account for vast sums of money approved by lawmakers and presidents from both major parties.

This presentation will feature panelists who will talk about their perspective on the economic equity aspects of the Micron project.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.Â
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team:  Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….Â

EVERY FRIDAY…4 to 4:45 p.m. (“CEASE FIRE NOW”, etc./ Palestine solidarity)
Focused on the war in the middle East…Israel’s military genocide of Gaza and invasion of Lebanon. We disperse along the sidewalk with our signs at the very busy intersection of Erie Blvd East and East Genesee St. (across from the DeWitt fire station; park in the nearby mini mall lot.) When the temperature is below 29 degrees, we cancel!Â
