Banners Instead of Billboards to Get Out The Vote On Saturday, September 12, 2026 from 11AM -2PM, the CNY Solidarity Coalition and Indivisible Onondaga County brought community members together for a ‘Big Beautiful Bridge Brigade’ to draw public attention to voting and this November’s general election. Participants were stationed at three locations along the NYS Thruway: they were Thompson Road in Syracuse, Tulip Street in Liverpool and Canton Street in Warners. Travelers in New York along the Thruway between Buffalo and the Massachusetts state line, as well as along I-81 from the Southern Tier to the North Country and along I-87 in the eastern part of the State, viewed democracy in action. Posted on overpasses in both directions, citizens stood with banners emblazoned with slogans such as ‘Stop The Chaos – Vote’ and ‘Vote Change’. The very visible banner at Tulip St. said: “Trump Lies, Troops Die, Prices Rise, Vote Blue.” Over fifty grassroots groups dedicated to protecting democracy sent teams to interstate overpasses to make their message clear: the current leadership in Washington is harmful to America’s economy and Constitution. The action was organized to make civic participation visible, accessible, and impossible to ignore and to get voters to the polls to flip the House and the Senate. As part of the NYS Midterm Bannering Project, the CNY Big Beautiful Bridge Brigades are three of the groups which held banners on the same day, at the same time. Bridges were occupied from Buffalo to the Massachusetts border and along both Routes 81 and 87. Lisa Harrell-DeLamater, one of the organizers, stated: “We are here to show everyone that we must stand up against fascism and we do that by getting into the streets and onto the bridges, and by voting early.” Steve Reiter on the Thompson Road bridge said: “I think people generally make the connection between government action and the struggles they are having, but they don’t recognize their power to create change. Hopefully, a bunch of folks on a bridge with a message to take action will give them the jolt they need to get that voting in the coming midterms is critical.” There will be two more similar events leading up to the midterms. Those dates are October 10 and October 31. Organizers have stated, “Our first priority is the safety of participants and drivers alike. We’re not anti-government. In fact, we are worried about the erosion of many of our civil rights that Americans have fought and died for since 1776. We see these actions as one of protecting our hard-won freedoms.”

BEWARE of Voter Registration Scam Sites! With the midterm elections approaching, it’s a good idea to make sure you are registered. Each state has a tool to do so, and the federal government has set up a page that directs you to the right place, vote.gov. This site, which is run by the Election Assistance Commission (EAC), does not ask for your personal information or track your activities. According to the site’s privacy policy, the EAC “does not collect personally-identifiable information about you when you visit our site, unless you choose to provide such information to us.” But Elon Musk, the world’s richest person, is funding an aggressive advertising campaign encouraging people in key states to check their registration status at a different website, “votesafe org”. That website is run by America PAC, Musk’s super PAC, and collects several pieces of information. Read More
